T&T vballers enjoy winning European weekend

    T&T professional volleyballers Marc-Anthony Honore, Sinead Jack, Channon Thompson and Krystle Esdelle all enjoyed wins with their respective European clubs on the weekend.

    In Portugal, lone national men’s team overseas-based player Honore helped reigning Portugal A-1 Division champion SL Benfica to a 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 defeat of lowly Vitoria SC on Saturday.

    The win kept Benfica in second spot on the 13-team table with a 16-4 record and 51 points, three behind Sporting CP which has a 19-1 record.

    Honore will be back in action on Saturday when his team faces 11th placed VC Viana-Casa Peixoto (5-16) which has 19 points, three ahead of Vitoria ((6-14) while cellar-placed AAS Mamede has seven points and a 2-17 record.

    Honore and his club is also through to the quarterfinals of the Confederation European Volleyball (CEV) Challenge Cup where it faces Italian League mid-table club, Ravena on February 13 and February 27.

    Over in Turkey, middle-blocker Sinead Jack and Galatasaray overcame Bursa B Sehir 25-14, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22 to improve to 13-5 in the 12-team Sultanlar Ligi and 38 points to maintain fourth place.

    At the top of the standings is Eczacibasi with a 16-1 record for 51 points followed by Vakifbank Istanbul with 48 points and 16-2 mark while Fernerbache is third with a 15-3 record and 43 points.

    One Division Lower in Turkey, attacking duo Channon Thompson and national captain Esdelle both helped their clubs to five sets wins in the 28-clubs two pools 1. Lig Bayanlar (Division Two).

    Thompson’s Ankara Numune battled past Bartin Polisgucu Spor 25-13, 22-25, 11-25, 26-24, 15-10 for an eight win in-a-row while Esdelle’s Pursaklar Voleybol Ihtisas (Belediyesi) overcame Samsun BSB Anakent 25-20, 18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 16-14.
