A platform of citizens has protested against the BNP’s remembrance of its leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury who was hanged for committing crimes against humanity during the War of Independence.
The protesters formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club on Monday afternoon under the banner of ‘Amra Nagorik Samaj’ (We are the society of citizens).
They said through this act, the BNP not only tried to undermine the spirit of Bangladesh’s liberation but humiliated the sufferings of all individuals who have lost their loved ones during the genocide of 1971.
The politician was hanged on Nov 22, 2015 for the horrific crimes he committed against humanity to thwart the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan.
The BNP paid tribute to the memory of Salauddin Quader during its national executive committee meeting on Saturday.

Ashikur said by showing respect to war criminals, the BNP has “again demonstrated that it is not only devoid of humanity but it also has absolutely no consideration for the family members of martyred intellectuals and freedom fighters who have perished in one of the worst genocides after the Second World War”.
“This shameless organisation will one day slip into oblivion like Muslim League. No injustice will go unchallenged, especially when war criminals are shown respect in the name of politics,” he warned.
