Sault outside shooting strong in win over Lady Chiefs

Mackenzie Kalchik scored 15 points, while Kayla Wilhelms and Ashtyn Bell added 11 points apiece for the Blue Devils (11-4 overall, 4-2 SAC).

SAULT STE. MARIE — Sault High took round 1 of what will be a home-and-home series this week against Cheboygan.

The Blue Devils had the hot hand from the perimeter, draining six 3-pointers in a 67-24 Straits Area Conference girls basketball win over the Chiefs.

“Coming off the loss against St. Ignace, I was curious about how we would play,” Sault High coach Pat Bennin said. “I thought our energy and effort was good. We bounced back very well, and other than maybe a three-minute stretch in the first quarter, we played pretty good basketball.”

Mackenzie Kalchik scored 15 points, while Kayla Wilhelms and Ashtyn Bell added 11 points apiece for the Blue Devils (11-4 overall, 4-2 SAC).

The Blue Devils took the early lead, and had a 18-10 advantage after the first quarter. Sault High went on a 23-3 run in the second quarter and led 41-13 at halftime.

The final minute of the third quarter, and most of the fourth quarter were played with a running clock.

Sault senior center Cece Werner missed the game with a knee injury.

The teams play again Thursday night at Cheboygan.

Angie Swiderek scored 10 points to lead the Chiefs (5-10 overall, 2-3 SAC). Caitlyn Franz and Isabelle Buhr scored four points each, and Molly Stankewicz added three points. Kathleen McNeight had two points and Cassie Barton had one point.

“They have a nice, well-rounded ball team,” Cheboygan coach Barry Salter said. “We made mistakes, and they capitalized on them, like good teams do.

“When we turned it over, they came down quickly and put three points on the board,” Salter said. “We’re young, starting two freshmen and a sophomore. It’s a tough challenge against a veteran Sault team. But we’ll try to learn from it, look to make some corrections and try to get a better result Thursday.”
