NOTEBOOK
Sharks: Veteran center Joe Thornton (knee) is on injured reserve and won’t play. … They defeated Carolina 3-1 on the road Sunday, their second straight triumph after a 0-2-2 winless skid. They are completing a five-game road trip that began at Pittsburgh and went through Detroit and Columbus. … San Jose lost 5-3 at Colorado on Jan. 18 in a game the Avs led 4-0. … The Sharks are 14-9-5 on the road. … San Jose’s 64 points are four more than what Colorado has in the standings, but the Avs have a game in hand.
Avalanche: This is Colorado’s first home game since Jan. 20, the day it defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 for its ninth consecutive win. Since then, the Avs have gone 2-3-1 on the road, including 1-1-1 last week following the all-star break. Colorado is in a stretch that has it playing 13 of 16 games outside of Denver. … Jonathan Bernier will start in net, his 12th start in the last 13 games. … Defenseman Mark Barberio (lower-body) and forward Sven Andrighetto (leg) didn’t practice Monday and won’t play Tuesday. … While it’s encouraging that first-line center Nathan MacKinnon skated on his own Monday, six days after suffering a shoulder injury, he did not practice with the team and it still could be weeks before he is cleared to take contact and return to the lineup. “There’s no change on MacKinnon at this point,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said after practice. “We’ve (been) given the (2-4 week) time-table and if anything changes on that we’ll let you know. But that’s just him wanting to get on the ice and skating — still use his legs even though he’s got the upper-body injury.”
