Clemson is pulling out all the stops as it makes a late run at Shelby (N.C.) linebacker Dax Hollifield.
The latest pitch from the Tigers came Sunday night when coach Dabo Swinney FaceTimed Hollifield while attending the Super Bowl. The Eagles ended up defeating the Patriots 41-33 with Swinney in attendance.
Hollifield said he has been building a close relationship with Swinney over the past few weeks since Clemson had a scholarship come open and started recruiting Hollifield again.
“Coming in, I’d never really talked to coach Swinney before. I’ve gotten to know him pretty well. He was FaceTiming me at the Super Bowl last night, which was pretty cool,” Hollifield told The State on Monday. “He was sitting in front of Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. It’s a pretty cool experience.”
Swinney also FaceTimed Hollifield the previous night when Hollifield was at dinner. Hollifield was sitting at a table next to a Clemson fan while talking with Swinney.
“The guy was a little nosy and was like, ‘Who are you talking to?’ I said, ‘Just this guy.’ He said, ‘Where’s he at? Where’s he FaceTiming you from?’ ‘He’s in Minneapolis. He’s going to the Super Bowl tomorrow,’ ” Hollifield recalled. “I turned the phone around, and he about freaked out. I’ve built really good relationships with coach Swinney andcoach (Brent) Venables. I like those guys a lot. They’re really great people.”
Hollifield will announce his decision Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the auditorium at Shelby High. He is down to a final four of Clemson, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Stanford.
