Rupa rape-murder case verdict Feb 12

TANGAIL: A district court on Monday (Feb 5) set Feb 12 to deliver the verdict of a case filed over the murder of law student Zakia Sultana Rupa, who was raped and killed in a moving bus in Tangail.

Acting judge Abul Mansur Miah of Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal fixed the date after closing prosecutions and defence arguments today. 

Earlier on Oct 25, court accepted the charge-sheet pressed against five transport workers in the case filed over Rupa’s killing. 

On Oct 15, Police submitted charge-sheet to a judicial magistrate court. The case was then transferred to Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Oct 16.

The charge-sheeted accused are Habibur, 45, the driver of the bus the girl was traveling on, its supervisor Safar Ali, 55, and helpers Shamim, 26, Akram, 35, and Jahangir, 19.

A total of 32 witnesses were also named in the charge-sheet including police, doctors and government officials.

Moreover, the charge-sheet also included the bus itself, cell phone of the victim, vanity bag, spectacles, blood stained clothes as evidence of the case. 

Earlier on August 25, the five transport workers of a Chhoya Paribahan bus allegedly gang-raped Zakia Sultana Rupa on a running bus bound for Mymensingh from Bogra. Later they dumped the body in a roadside forest in Madhupur.

Police recovered the body in the same night and buried in Tangail Central Graveyard as unidentified on August 26. Police filed a murder case in this regard.

Later on Aug 28, victim’s brother came to Madhupur police station to identify the body after learning about the death in newspaper.

Following public outrage triggered by the incident, police arrested the five suspects who later confessed to the crime in court.

On Aug 31, Rupa’s body was exhumed and handed over to her family for proper burial. 

On September 12, the autopsy doctor Saifur Rahman submitted the post-mortem report in which he stated that the death of Rupa was caused by head injury and that she had been raped before death.
