Samsung could be planning on ditching the ‘S’ naming convention in time for the tenth edition in 2019.

Somewhat sketchy reports from China have suggested the Galaxy S9 will be the last phone to be follow the nomenclature.

So, if it’s not going to be the S10, what’s it going to be?

Well, the report thinks the company will follow in Apple’s footsteps and called it the Galaxy X.

The information comes from GizChina.com, speaking to a source in Samsung’s Korean homeland.

It says the firm wants a ‘simpler naming scheme to avoid having unusual names such as S11 or S15 in the future.’

If the report proves accurate, Samsung would risk accusations it lacked imagination to find an original name for the range, which first arrived in 2010.

Name already taken?

We’d suggest such a move would be unlikely, especially given the Galaxy X name has been floated for Samsung’s foldable phone concept.

Earlier this month Samsung admitted foldable OLED phones will be coming this year, so perhaps the source in South Korea is a little confused?

During its most recent earnings call, the company said: “In 2018, we will differentiate through the development of cutting-edge products, such as foldable OLED smartphones.”

At CES in January the company showed off its prototypes to high-level attendees to gain feedback on the handset.

Recent rumours have suggested it’ll come a 7.3-inch flexible OLED screen that unfolds into medium-sized tablet. It’s said there’ll be an Exynos 9810/Snapdragon 845 CPU, a dual-camera 6GB of RAM.

In the meantime, the latest Galaxy S9 handset will arrive on February 25 at a Samsung Unpacked event on the eve of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
