Auburn has had success holding onto recruits in the Class of 2018.
There were a few scares throughout the process, though.
Defensive tackle Coynis Miller flirted with a few other programs after committing to Auburn. He put all of that concern to rest last week. Wide receiver Matthew Hill has shown late interest in Clemson. Given his final-weekend visit to the Plains, Hill seems destined to ink with Auburn on Signing Day. That will ease nerves of many Tigers fans.
It’s still possible the Tigers lose a commitment from one of their remaining prospects.
Kolbi Fuqua has been the big mystery of the last month. He took an official visit in January, and a source close to him said the family would find out soon whether he’d sign with Auburn, take a grayshirt or consider another school. There hasn’t been a ton of buzz around Fuqua since. With Auburn expectations tempered for Signing Day, the most likely scenario right now is Fuqua signing with the Tigers.
That would mean only one de-commitment from Auburn for the entire 2018 class.
Let’s take a look at that lone de-commitment.
4-star LB Robert Hicks (Miami) — Signed with Louisville
Robert Hicks originally committed to Auburn on March 1, 2016. He de-committed from the Tigers on Sept. 3, 2016, the same day as the 2016 football season opener against Clemson. In between those two dates, the outside linebacker/defensive end from Miami took a summer camp visit, where he was further evaluated by the coaching staff.
To cut to the chase: This de-commitment was a mutual parting of ways.
Hicks committed to the Tigers a couple weeks after receiving an offer. At the time of his public commitment, Auburn still had its doubts about which direction it wanted to go with that position group. After camping, both sides determined it was a premature commitment, that it was in the best interest of Hicks to step back and re-evaluate all his options.
As Hicks told SEC Country at the time, the Tigers were still strongly in consideration.
But Auburn never made a serious push after that point, which gives a strong indication of who was the primary decision-maker in the original de-commitment.
Hicks ultimately drew interest from a handful of solid Power 5 programs, including Louisville, Oregon and Michigan State. The Cardinals won out in the end. Hicks signed with Bobby Petrino & Co. during the early signing period. By the end of his recruitment, Hicks earned a 4-star rating as the No. 11-ranked inside linebacker in the country and became an Under Armour All-American.
Auburn landed similar linebacker talents such as Michael Harris, Richard Jibunor and Josh Marsh. Both sides of this de-commitment found happy destinations.
