A Brownsville woman was arrested Saturday at the Gateway International Bridge after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say she tried to smuggle 12 pounds of cocaine into the country.
According to a news release, the 28-year-old woman was driving a gold 2006 Pontiac Torrent when she was ordered to undergo a secondary inspection because a canine unit detected the possibility of narcotics.
Officers say they found six packages of cocaine hidden in the SUV.
“Our officers remain committed to the CBP border security mission maintaining a robust enforcement posture,” said Port Director Bob Parker, Brownsville Port of Entry. “I congratulate our officers on this excellent seizure.”
The drugs had a street value of $92,480.
CBP officers seized the cocaine and the SUV. The woman was taken into custody and turned her over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents.
