Hong Kong operator HKT is collaborating with Jumbo Taxi to equip 100 of its taxis with a connected-car platform, equipment to provide Wi-Fi inside cars and a QR-code based payment system. The connected-car platform is provided by HKT's brand CSL Mobile. At the same time, all Jumbo Taxi vehicles will soon be equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot linked to HKT's 4G/LTE network via a ZTE 4G/LTE onboard diagnostics (OBD) device, so taxi commuters can enjoy fast internet access free of charge.

The platform also tracks a taxi's real-time location using GPS technology and assesses driver behaviour via analysing driving pattern, with the aim of enhancing road safety. The connected-car platform will be present on all taxis by the end of the first quarter this year.

In addition, taxi commuters will be able to enjoy the cashless convenience of using Tap & Go "Go QR" of HKT Payment when settling the taxi fares in a Jumbo Taxi vehicle. Taxi drivers will be provided with a unique QR code for customers to scan on, and customers can then input the fare amount and confirm the payment using the Tap & Go mobile wallet. Both the driver and the customer will instantly receive a message confirming the payment.

A promotion running until 30 June will allow customers to enjoy a waiver of the HKD 50 taxi booking charge (when made via the 5711 1222 Jumbo Taxi hotline) and luggage fee, when a ride clocks up a minimum spend of HKD 150. In addition, Tap & Go customers can get a HKD 50 Tap & Go stored value rebate when their Jumbo Taxi ride incurs a spending of HKD 100 or above with payment by Tap & Go during the promotion period until 31 March.
