ROCHESTER — The president and CEO of Frisbie Memorial Hospital retired Monday.

John Marzinzik served in leadership positions at the Rochester hospital for 24 years. He was named CEO in December 2014.

Frisbie Board Chair Brian Hughes said they are thankful to Marzinzik and his family for their longtime commitment to the Rochester community.

“His work as President and CEO has helped initiate a significant community response to the opioid epidemic and the mental health issues facing Rochester and surrounding towns,” Hughes said in a statement.

Marzinzik oversaw the opening of the 18,000-square-foot Rochester Community Recovery Center in the heart of the city’s downtown.

At the opening in September of 2016, Marzinzik said hospital leaders realized more needed to be done to help those affected by addiction, so they picked up the costs for renting the facility.

Marzinzik and his team worked with the Rochester Police Department, City Council, Rochester Housing Authority, Southeastern New Hampshire Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Great Bay Community College and the YMCA to make the recovery center a reality.

In August, Marzinzik announced the hospital had partnered with the center to add a Live Free Recovery program for teens. At the time, Marzinzik said they had treated a patient as young as 13-years-old with Narcan in the hospital’s emergency room.

Marzinzik was named the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce 2017 Business Leader of the Year.

In 2016, Frisbie Memorial Hospital was named Business New Hampshire Magazine’s Business Leader of the Year for Health Care because of its civic involvement, contributions and commitment to advancing positive change, according to hospital officials.

Marzinzik could not immediately be reached for comment.

Frisbie Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jocelyn Caple has been named interim president and CEO.

She has been part of the Frisbie community for more than 20 years, according to hospital officials.

“I’m excited to be helping to write the next chapter of Frisbie’s history with the dedicated team here,” Caple said in a statement.

On Monday, the hospital also announced they are working with Prism Healthcare Partners, management consultants specializing in performance improvement for health systems.
