Port City natives earn awards from USTA North Carolina
Three from Wilmington were honored during the United States Tennis Association North Carolina's annual banquet at Pinehurst Resort on Saturday.
Two were recognized for their efforts during their time as high school players. Former Laney player Kendall Hanks was named the high school tennis female player of the year while Lucas McLatchy, a New Hanover alumnus, took the high school male player of the year honor.
Brock Boehling, a Southeastern Homeschool student, was awarded the Hal Southern Junior Tennis Male Sportsmanship Award in the 14-year-old category.
Boehling is one of more than 50 from the area slated to visit Asheville on Saturday for the Fed Cup, where the United States will face the Netherlands in the opening round. The trip is sponsored by One Love Tennis, an organization founded by Lenny Simpson.
One Love Tennis also received the state's chapter of the year award on Saturday.
FENCING
Southeastern Homeschool goes unbeaten
In the final regular season event of the Homeschool Fencing League, Philip Nazzaro and Liam Coyle of Southeastern Homeschool went undefeated on Saturday.
The duo topped Twin City and New Bern by 45-31 scores and then host Oak Ridge 45-29.
At the Regional Youth Circuit event held in Apex on Saturday, Will Golfer finished 13th out of 31 in the youth-14 boys foil. Nicole Milewski won gold in the youth-14 girls epee.

Bolivia duo at CGA Ladies Four-Ball Play
Susan Cunningham and Cynthia Amicone finished third net in the second flight of the Carolinas Golf Association's Ladies Four-Ball PLay Day.
Held at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, the Bolivia golfers were joined in the event by two more from Brunswick County.
Calabash's Ruth Gubelman finished second gross in the third flight with Marlene Emery. Bolivia's Lynne Rice was third net with Carmen Humenik on the fourth flight.
