SC train crash: 2 in critical condition, 6 remain in hospitals | The State

At least two people remain in critical condition a day after an Amtrak train crashed in Lexington County.

Palmetto Health reported Monday that its hospitals had received 62 patients, 59 of them adults and three of them children at multiple locations. Of the 62 patients, 56 were treated and released. But two remain in critical condition, while two are considered serious, one fair and one in good condition.

Steve Shelton, Palmetto Health director of emergency preparedness, said Monday those injured in the crash were lucky.

“The majority of the casualties were minor injuries,” Shelton said. “These are bumps, bruises, some lacerations; some minor fractures were the majority of the casualties.”

Some of the injured did receive brain and organ injuries, but none of the patients have gotten worse, Shelton said.

Also, Lexington Medical Center received 27 patients who were in the crash. Two remain hospitalized, but are in stable condition, said Jennifer Wilson, spokeswoman for Lexington Medical.

There were eight crew members and approximately 139 passengers on board in the Amtrak crash Sunday morning. Two people – the train’s conductor and engineer – were killed, and more than 100 were rushed to area hospitals.
