After 50 years in business, FM News closes for good

FARGO—A business name that has been around Fargo for 50 years is no more.

FM News, a store that mainly sold books and magazines, closed recently at its latest location, 2551 45th St. S.

"The magazines and books, the market's not here anymore. It's all internet. We couldn't keep it going," said Jim Patterson, who along with his wife, Kim, purchased the business about a year ago.

He moved the business to its latest spot after it shut down in late 2016 at a location at 2302 S. University Drive, a strip mall that has since been demolished.

Patterson said an effort was made to revamp the business, which had three employees, to improve its chances of surviving, but he said the decision to close the store couldn't be avoided.

He said one aspect of the business, its arcade games, will continue, but at a different location yet to be determined.

FM News Arcades will likely operate by appointment only, according to Patterson.

"We're looking at a couple spots in south fargo," he said.

After FM News closed, another business moved into its location—Enchantasys—which describes itself as an intimate boutique that offers lingerie and adult products.

It is the second Enchantasys store in Fargo and there are two in the Twin Cities, according to Kim Patterson, who operates the business.

The store was up and running quickly in the former FM News location.

"Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so we didn't want to waste any time," Kim Patterson said, stressing that the business is run and staffed by women.

"My staff is extensively trained," she said, adding that education is a main focus of the business.

She said Enchantasys holds classes every month on various topics dealing with sexuality.

Hours at Enchantasys are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m., Sunday.
