It looks like Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) is sticking around Star Trek: Discovery a little bit longer.
The former head of the Terran Empire has been tasked with leading an important mission that will see the crew go head to the Klingons' home planet of Qo'noS. So why would the Federation put their trust in a malevolent ruler from the Mirror Universe? Desperate times, you see.
Arriving back in the Prime Universe nine months later than they intended, the Discovery crew finds Starfleet on the losing side of the war with the Klingons. Even worse, infighting among the different Klingon factions has led to massive civilian deaths throughout the galaxy and now the dangerous, pointy-faced aliens are inching their way towards Earth.
Given that Georgiou defeated the Klingons in her own universe, Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Admiral Cornwell (Jayne Brook) see the former emperor as the best person for the job. If Discovery succeeds in destroying the Klingons' military base in their own backyard, the Federation stands a chance at actually winning the war and putting an end to these senseless deaths.
Star Trek: Discovery Star Breaks Down that Shocking Death
However, the whole thing rides on Georgiou not double-crossing them, and since she has no strong ties to either side, her betrayal feels inevitable. Let's hope the crew has a backup plan just in case.
Meanwhile, Burnham finally settled things with Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) who -- mirroring Burnham after she was found guilty of mutiny -- has been stripped of his rank and faces an uncertain future. The good news is that Voq seems to have been erased completely, allowing for most of the crew to forgive him. Unfortunately, Burnham -- and a grieving Stamets (Anthony Rapp) -- are not so easily swayed. Unable to forget their last encounter in which he nearly choked her to death, Burnham formally ends their relationship, and Tyler is left to sulk.
With the Discovery headed to Qo'noS, we're almost at the finish line for Season 1. Can they destroy their Klingons' military bases or will their brilliant plan go up in flames?
Watch it all go down when the season finale of Star Trek: Discovery streams Sunday at 8:30/7:30c exclusively on CBS All Access.
