The island-state is the closest possible point in the US to Kim Jong-un’s hermit kingdom, and has been placed in the spotlight as they prepare for the risk of missile attack.
Panic swept across the state just weeks ago after Hawaii’s missile defence system sent messages warning of imminent attack in a botched drill.
And Hawaii has for a while been directly identified by North Korea as one of its key targets in a full-on nuclear attack of the US.
Shocking new pictures have now revealed the horrific condition of the state’s bunkers – showing there will be no place to hide should an attack come.
Bomb shelters are not part of the nuclear attack plan for Hawaii – with secret documents revealed there would be a 20 minute warning, 15,000 dead, and no evacuation.

“The funding ran out”

The local who photographed this shelter in the Āliamanu neighbourhood of Honolulu said it was decommissioned in 1974 and put up for sale in the 1990s, but never sold.
In photos, the walls of the shelter are daubed with graffiti including pentagrams and the Eye of Providence – a symbol associated with freemasonry.
Electrics hang from the walls and ceilings, and tiling has been stripped away leaving just the timber frame underneath.

The photographer, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I personally don’t see Hawaii sponsoring bunkers.
“There are just too many people here in the islands and the shelter space required would be very immense.
“We are close to Korea too, so getting to the bunker within 20 minutes would not be possible for most people.”
Inside North Korea: The pictures Kim Jong-un doesn't want you to see

All residents in Hawaii got a shock after an erroneous missile warning was sent to their phones back in January.
It told people to immediately seek shelter, with the warning stating in block capitals: "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER, THIS IS NOT A DRILL."
However, it was in fact a drill – and it emerged the employee had sent the message after getting the test and warning buttons mixed-up.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, which is leading the island’s preparations for a potential attack, said the lack of bunkers was down to funding.
A spokesperson said: “Oahu as late as the 1990s had hundreds of designated shelters, some with medical supplies and food.
“But as the Cold War died and the Iron Curtain came down, the Soviet Union turned into Russia and there was no threat anymore, so the funding ran out.”
