Identity theft cost woman thousands

A Georgian Bluffs woman reported she was recently a victim of identity theft, which cost her thousands of dollars.

She called Grey County OPP on Friday to report what happened. Police said in a news release that on Jan. 25 an unknown female using a fake driver’s licence and citizenship card and withdrew thousands of dollars from a TD Bank in Guelph.

She then went to TD Bank in London and transferred thousands of dollars. Then she tried to transfer $46,000 at a TD Bank in Waterloo but a teller grew suspicious. The teller asked her questions to confirm her identity and the suspect fled.

Police continue to investigate.

Identity theft can occur by phone, email, regular mail or the Internet. Identity information can be obtained by going through garbage or computer phishing, skimming, malware, spyware and viruses, the police release said.

Police advise people to be wary of unsolicited emails, phone calls or mail asking for personal or financial information and to check their credit card statements and report anything suspicious, including any missing statements or other mail.

Information with identity details such as financial statements should be shredded, not tossed in the garbage.
