Congress candidate to speak in Staples

STAPLES—Dave Hughes, congressional candidate, will speak at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at Twisted Sister's Restaurant in Staples.
Hughes is running for the U.S. Congress from Minnesota's 7th Congressional District. A Republican, Hughes is seeking the seat now held by Democrat Collin Peterson.
Hughes ran for the seat in 2016. Hughes lost the election with 47.5 percent of the vote compared to Peterson's 52.5 percent.
"That was the closest a Republican has come to defeating Peterson in 20 years, resulting in more grassroots interest and higher levels of fundraising," according to a news release announcing the speaking event.
Hughes was born in San Diego. He graduated from San Diego State University in 1992 with a degree in aerospace engineering. Hughes served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring with the rank of major. He was deployed in Central Europe and the Middle East seven times as a pilot, and then as an adviser and judge in Iraq.
After retirement from the Air Force, Hughes joined General Atomics. There he serves as a MQ-9 Unmanned Aerial System instructor pilot teaching U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircrews, as well as flying operational missions on both northern and southern borders.
He and his wife Amanda have six biological and one adopted child. They live in Karlstad.
The event will be a dinner meeting, with activities to begin as soon as dinners are ordered and served.
