BLANCHARD, Okla. (AP) — A superintendent in central Oklahoma wants to separate private schools from public schools during high school playoff competition.

Blanchard Superintendent Jim Beckham will present a proposal Wednesday to the Board of Directors at the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, the state's governing body for high school athletics. The proposal puts more than 30 private, magnet and charter schools into their own playoff system after competing with public schools in the regular season.

Beckham tells the Oklahoman he collected more than 20 signatures from Oklahoma superintendents to present the proposal to the association. If he gains the board's approval, the issue would be sent to all 480 member schools for a vote.

The proposal continues a nationwide debate over whether competition between public schools and private schools is fair.
