MINNEAPOLIS – When it comes to the Patriots offseason, sweeping changes are expected and not all of them will be surprises.
When it comes to Rob Gronkowski, however, the tight end’s uncertain future is one of the biggest surprises to come out of the wake of Super Bowl LII. After Sunday’s game, Gronk said he was going to take time to re-evaluate his future in football. The fact that he wouldn’t commit to playing next season was shocking.
In his final media availability, on Monday, Bill Belichick was asked if he expects Gronkowski back in 2018. The Patriots coach didn’t answer directly, but did shed some light on the situation.
“At the end of every season, every person goes through somewhat of a process at the end of the season and then the following season," Belichick said. "I think everyone that is involved in a NFL season, you get pretty drained especially after a season like this. [You] go through the end of the year process. The following year is the following year. It’s the same for everybody.
"I certainly can’t speak for anybody else. You’d have to ask any individual for every situation, but I would say five minutes after the game, or the day after the game is not really the time to make those decisions.”
