The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a historic victory over the New England Patriots in last night’s Super Bowl.
The 41 to 33 win, at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, was the first in the Eagles’ 57-year history, and came at the end of “one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played”, says The Guardian.
In a game of seesawing fortunes, a number of records were broken, including both teams combining for 1,151 offensive yards, which the BBC reports is “a record not just for a Super Bowl but for any regular- or post-season game in NFL history”.
Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles, who was named “most valuable player”, became the first player in Super Bowl history to both throw a pass for a touchdown and receive a pass for a touchdown, following a trick play to give the Eagles the lead going into the second half.
New England’s chances of catching The Eagles with just over two minutes left to play were dealt a match-ending blow when star Patriots quarterback Tom Brady fumbled the ball after being tackled by Brandon Graham, giving possession to Philadelphia.
