CANTON — The University of Findlay women’s basketball team took the lead four times in the fourth quarter against Walsh on Saturday.
Each time, the Cavaliers snatched it back.
Walsh’s Kimmie Borck buried an open 3-pointer from the left wing with 58 seconds remaining to account for the last one and propel the Cavs to a 77-73 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory at Alumni Arena in Canton.
“It was just crappy defense, from the third quarter to the fourth quarter,” UF coach Jim Wiedie said. “You give up 46 points in the second half. You get a nine-point lead, we’re playing well defensively, we’re active, communicating, doing a good job on the switches and we allow them to shoot 64 percent in the 3rd quarter and 50 percent in the fourth quarter.”
The Oilers dropped to 16-5 overall, 13-4 in the GMAC.
UF junior Anna Hintz notched a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds, eight offensive, and also swatted three shots.
She scored only six points in Thursday’s win over Malone — her first game all season below 10 points.
“She was much more aggressive, asserted herself,” Wiedie said. “She played a little soft on Thursday, kind of relied on her turnaround jumper a little bit too much.”
Haley Horstman led UF with 19 points. Jenna Stegmaier chipped in 12.
Findlay led 48-39 in the third quarter. An 8-0 Walsh run put them right back in the game.
Horstman scored three times in the fourth quarter, each to give UF the lead — the last at 69-68 right after Alex Hochstedler scored for Walsh.
But late in the shot clock, a missed assignment left Borck open for 3.
Back down at the other end, the Oilers struggled to find a clean look and eventually committed a shot-clock violation as Lynsey Englebrecht got tied up in the left corner.
Walsh closed out the game by making 6 of 6 at the foul line in the final 24 seconds.
The Oilers never had a chance to tie again.
“It shouldn’t be this way, but our offense generates our defense,” Wiedie said. “When we’re scoring, we’re a little more amped up, we’re a little more vocal.”
Collectively, Findlay shot 44 percent (28 of 63) and couldn’t overcome a 5-of-19 fourth quarter.
Englebrecht made one 3-pointer in seven attempts.
She returned after a one-game absence after being hit by a car on UF campus Wednesday, forcing her to miss Thursday’s game.
Wiedie wasn’t sure if he’d have her but said Englebrecht told him she felt great on Friday.
“I said ‘you know it’s going to be a physical game. You know they’re going to get up in you,'” Wiedie said. “I was really impressed with how she handled herself considering what she looked like on Wednesday morning.
“Off night for her but that’s understandable considering what she’s been through this week.”
