The mother of a former Carolina Panther was injured when her Amtrak train collided with a parked freight train in South Carolina early Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

Andre Neblett, who played for the Panthers from 2010 to 2012, spoke with his mother Tronia Dorsey after the crash, the AP reported.

A seat came loose due to the crash and hit Dorsey, 43, in the legs, Neblett said. Her injuries were minor, but waiting for help in the dark was terrifying, she told Neblett.

Neblett drove down from North Carolina to pick up his mom’s luggage at a Red Cross shelter, the AP reported.

All but about 20 of the train’s 139 passengers were taken to local hospitals after the crash, which took place west of Columbia at about 2:35 a.m., The State reported.

Two people were killed – Amtrak employees Michael Kempf, 54, and Michael Cella, 36, who were both in the train’s first car at the time of the crash.

“It’s a horrible thing to see to understand the force that is involved,” Gov. Henry McMaster said, according to The State. “The first engine of the freight train was torn up and the single engine of the Amtrak train was barely recognizable. It was quite a crash.”

The crash is still being investigated.
