Manchester United are back to winning ways in the Premier League after beating Huddersfield and it was a home debut to remember for Alexis Sanchez.

The Chilean was handed his first Old Trafford start and topped off a man of the match performance with a second half goal.

The big news before kick off was that Paul Pogba had been dropped and Scott McTominay was starting in his place.

There was uproar from the fans after Mourinho's decision but the United boss insisted it had nothing to do with the Frenchman's performance against Spurs.

"I change a few players and the intention was not to punish anyone," Mourinho said. "Because to punish anyone I also need someone to punish me because we are a team and when we win we win together and we lose together."

Neville: Mourinho sent a message to the United dressing room vs Huddersfield

On the subject of Paul Pogba’s omission, Gary Neville told Sky Sports:

“I don’t think Pogba, Jones, Young and Martial can have any complaints about being left out after that game the other night, because they were really poor.

“But for Pogba in particular, it was obvious Jose Mourinho was furious with him at times during the game.

“Maybe Jose’s thought he needs a bit of a lesson and he needs to show him that he’s looking at the other night and he’s showing the dressing room.

“This could be a message to the dressing room saying ‘I’m leaving out our most expensive player, I’m taking him out of the team because I need to show there’s a consequence of what they did on Wednesday night.’

Keylor Navas on De Gea links

Asked about the rumours of Real Madrid pursuing David De Gea this summer, Keylor Navas said:

“I am calm because one day I will have to go.

“Nobody will last here forever and only God knows when [I will leave].

“I give my all in every training session and in every match, so I can live with that. I don’t know if the club have doubts about me, I only know that I still have a contract and I will remain calm.

“If Real Madrid were to sign a goalkeeper in the future and let him compete with me, then I would like that and it wouldn’t intimidate me.”

Sanches thought he was going to United

United wanted Renato Sanches prior to his Bayern Munich move, and now Swansea manager Paul Clement claims that he believed he was going on loan to Old Trafford last summer.

Clement said:

He wasn’t so keen (on joining Swansea) initially. He thought he was going to go to Man United, Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern were saying, ‘You’re not going there, it would be the same situation, you’re not going to play.’

When he came, he was far more damaged than I thought. It was really sad. He was a boy who had almost got the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Mourinho being blamed for the problems at Chelsea

Interesting article in the Mirror today suggesting Mourinho has got right under Antonio Conte’s skin.

Steve Bates writes:

Antonio Conte still wants a full-on clash with Jose Mourinho later this month – and Chelsea bosses won’t try to stop him.

Conte is raging at the Manchester United chief’s reference to a match-fixing scandal the Italian was caught up in – and cleared of – when manager of Serie B side Siena in 2011.

After the jibe, Conte called his rival a “fake” and a “little man” before vowing to have a face-off with the Portuguese when the teams meet at Old Trafford on February 25.

Some Chelsea officials believe ‘The Special One’ has got under Conte’s skin and is partly behind his meltdown at Stamford Bridge.

Fans react to Mourinho's atmosphere comments

Fair to say there has been a mixed reaction to Mourinho’s moans about lack of Old Trafford atmosphere. Here’s one:

Mkhitaryan didn't get chances at United

Danny Murphy said on Match of the Day:

“They [Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan] linked up really nicely today.

“Mkhitaryan especially was the star of the show in respect of those two.

His assists were there and we know he’s got that quality.

”Mkhitaryan loves getting in that No10 role and his first touch is always forwards.

“Surprisingly at Man Utd he didn’t get the chances that I thought he should have done.

“He finds the perfect through ball for Aubameyang and that’s a really, really clever finish for his goal.”

Mkhitaryan made 22 appearances for United this season. Plenty of chances were given.

Mkhitaryan inconsistency

This inconsistency was a problem at United.
