Elmer 'likely' to run for Moorhead mayor

"I'm close to a decision," she said last week during a call with The Forum. She described her position as "likely" to run.

Elmer said she feels she would do a good job as mayor given her experience on the council and "my record in moving Moorhead forward."

But, she said, she's watching to see who else might run.

"If it's somebody who I think would do a good job, I would not necessarily need to insert myself," she said.

First elected in 2009 to represent the 3rd Ward, which includes parts of south Moorhead along the Red River, her term ends Dec. 31. She currently also serves as the mayor pro tem, meaning she's the mayor's substitute.

Elmer, who owns a property management and investment business, said on the city website that her priorities are economic development, government effectiveness and responsiveness, and public safety.

So far the only Moorhead resident to publicly announce his candidacy for mayor is Newzad Brifki, the founder of the Kurdish Community of America based here.

Williams, who is in her first term, has said that should be enough to accomplish a few things. She said there are many good people in the community who could also serve.
