Behind the strength of its relay teams, the Wayland boys swimming and diving team won the Dual County League Championships meet held at Atkinson Pool in Sudbury on Saturday.
Wayland finished with 503 points while Lincoln-Sudbury’s 346 points was good for second place. Westford Academy (315) rounded out the top three.
This is the second straight DCL Championships meet win for Wayland.
“Really proud of these guys, so happy for the seniors to go out like this and Sean [Devlin] and Asa [Greenaway] especially had great days being a part of winning relays and individual events,” Wayland coach Mike Foley said. “But it was our depth where we once again got a lot of points.”
Wayland started strong as the Warriors won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:39.7.
Anthony Xue, Jiming Xu, and Andy Brogan teamed up with Devlin to take first in the event. Wayland’s B-relay came in second, which was the first time a team had taken the top two spots at the DCL Championships in a relay event, as Danny Nee, Greenaway, Edmond Giang, and Nick Smith finished second in a time of 1:40.99.
“That was one of the goals the guys kind of had all year to see if we could go 1-2,” Foley said. “We checked and it had never been done before [at the DCL Championships].”
Wayland also won the 4x100 freestyle relay with Giang, Xue, Greenaway and Devlin in a time of 3:19.71.
Devlin won the 50 freestyle (22.00) and was fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Giang won the 100 butterfly it with a time of 52.69 and placed second in 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.20.
Greenaway finished second in the 50 free with a time of 22.35 and was DCL League champion in the 100 breaststroke with a time 1:00.62
Xu placed second in the 100 breaststroke behind Greenaway with a time of 1.01.51.
In its second-place performance overall, Lincoln-Sudbury’s 200 freestyle relay team of Parker Simon, Chris Ganio, Conor Lee, and Colin Baker finished with a time of 1:31.19.
Ganio finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.19.
“Honestly before going into that [200 freestyle] relay we weren’t really expecting a spot in the top three let alone first place,” Ganio said. “But after we finished our first leg of the really I think we all felt like that race was different from any of our relays in past years.”
Both Wayland and L-S next compete in the North sectional meet on Feb. 11 at MIT.
