Newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has assured of doing everything to take forward the judiciary.
He said he will try his level best to discharge his duty as Chief Justice maintaining coordination among three pillars of the State -- legislative, executive and judiciary, reports UNB.
"Only a proper coordination among the three pillars of the State -- legislative, executive and judiciary - can spur development in the country. In absence of the coordination, there may be disruption in development. So, I'll try my level best to perform my duty in coordination of the three pillars," said the Chief Justice.
He came up with the remarks while addressing a reception accorded by the Attorney General's office and the Supreme Court Bar Association during his first day of office.
On Saturday, he was sworn in at Bangabhaban as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. President Abdul Hamid administered the oath.
Mahmud Hossain, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, was appointed Chief Justice barely three months after Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned from the post on November 10 last year.
Sinha went on leave on health grounds in October.
Mahmud Hossain said he would try his best so that the Supreme Court can discharge its functions as enshrined in the constitution. "The huge pending cases are a big problem for us. To mitigate the problem, we'll have to work together," he added.
"Honesty is the biggest strength of judges. Their souls ate the main places of accountability. Judges will only follow the Constitution and laws of the land," Hossain observed.
He went on saying, "It's my duty to conduct judicial activities impartially, maintaining highest sincerity and honesty and rising above all sorts of fears, keeping the oath in my heart."
He also stressed enactment of a law to recruit judges under Article 95, (2) (Ga) of the Constitution.
