MULTIPLE casualties have been reported after an explosion at a house in Farnworth, Greater Manchester.

Emergency services were called to the explosion near Bolton at around 2.40pm on Sunday afternoon.

A man in his 70s is in a serious condition in hospital.

North West Ambulance Service have confirmed that two casualties — an elderly man and woman — have been taken to Wythenshaw Hospital.

Friends Ashley Chalke, 29, and Nathan Wallwork, 28, described the chaos.

CASUALTIES: North West Ambulance Service confirmed two elderly residents were taken to hospital

Ashley told Manchester Evening News: "I was stood having a cigarette when I heard a big explosion.

"It sounded like a bomb going off. I thought, 'What the hell was that?' and when I looked out I saw smoke coming from the house at the end of the road.

"I shouted for Nathan and we ran down there to investigate."
