“It sounded like a bomb going off”

Emergency services were called to the explosion near Bolton at around 2.40pm on Sunday afternoon.
A man in his 70s is in a serious condition in hospital.
North West Ambulance Service have confirmed that two casualties — an elderly man and woman — have been taken to Wythenshaw Hospital.
Friends Ashley Chalke, 29, and Nathan Wallwork, 28, described the chaos.

Ashley told Manchester Evening News: "I was stood having a cigarette when I heard a big explosion.
"It sounded like a bomb going off. I thought, 'What the hell was that?' and when I looked out I saw smoke coming from the house at the end of the road.
"I shouted for Nathan and we ran down there to investigate."

Dozens of homes have been evacuated and an air ambulance was sent to the scene on Rydal Grove.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers responded to a suspected gas explosion earlier this afternoon.
