SAN JOSE — A woman apparently being chased by an unknown assailant was shot and gravely wounded in a violent episode that unfolded in West San Jose late Saturday, authorities said.
Gunfire was reported around 11:55 p.m. on Cadillac Drive, off Winchester Boulevard near the Campbell border, police said. Nearby residents reported hearing around five gunshots in the area just before midnight.
Responding officers and emergency personnel arrived to find an adult female victim with at least one gunshot wound. The victim, a 34-year-old San Jose woman, was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
A source familiar with the investigation told this news organization that the victim was on life support as of Sunday morning.
An initial investigation revealed a frantic sequence where the woman was driving in the area with a male passenger, and that the two were being chased by another motorist. The victim crashed into a tree, and moments later, an unidentified person walked up to the wreck and fired multiple shots into the vehicle, Officer Gina Tepoorten said.
The male passenger in the victim’s car ran away, and the suspect reportedly shot at the fleeing man, Tepoorten said. But the man was not hit, and later spoke with investigators. He is also believed to be one of several people who called 911.
Police did not immediately release any suspect descriptions or a possible motive for the shooting.
It marked the city’s second high-profile shooting of the day: Around 12:45 p.m. Saturday, a man was shot and wounded in broad daylight while washing his car in a residential neighborhood in North San Jose. Three suspects are being sought in that attack.
