Chittagong Abahani had moved to the last four beating Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra by 4-2 margin in the Independence Cup Football on Saturday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
Winning the match, the port city team is set to play the second semi-final against Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society.
In the meantime, a dream of the traditional sky blue brigade to be treble winner this year was shattered after being eliminated from the quarerfinals on Friday losing a match to comparatively less powerful Arambagh Krira Sangha by 3-0 margin. The Abahani boys were frustrated as they had began the season in a good mood with the title of season opener Federation Cup and won the trophy of recently finished Bangladesh Premier League. But, the eight placers of the league, Arambagh boys, had secured their spot in the semis proving their competency indeed.
In the other quarterfinal matches, Sheikh Jamal Dhannondi Club confirmed the semis beating Brothers Union while Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society also booked the ticket winning an Old Dhaka club rivalry against Farashganj Sporting Club.
With the match on Saturday, the round of last eight of the event was finished as well. Still, the Federation couldn't announce the final match schedule while the semi-finals are beginning tomorrow (Monday).
