Hello and welcome to our blog bringing you live coverage of Newcastle United's post-match press conference against Crystal Palace from Selhurst Park.

Rafa Benitez was looking to register a crucial win away from home with United now only above the relegation zone on goal difference and would probably end the game the happier of the two managers after a nervy game in South London.

Mo Diame's opener gave Newcastle a glimpse of the victory but they were second best in the second half and Luka Milivojevic's penalty was the least Roy Hodgson's side deserved.

United now have a week until their next game, which is a home clash with Manchester United at St James' Park.

Rafa on the point:

So to wrap up what Rafa said:

  • Slimani only just missed out
  • Joselu had a virus and NUFC “have to be careful” with him
  • Fans were fantastic and NUFC must show unity
  • Felt a point was fair on second half performance but that if they’d scored the counter attack early in the second half they’d have won the game
  • The penalty was “soft” but no complaints. “We have had many similar situations and don’t get them,” he said.
  • “The team is working hard and giving everything”

Here’s what we’ve put up so far:

Great support once again. NUFC fan gallery.

Palace man says sorry to fans:

Rafa thought it was a soft penalty:

In the first half we were fine. We started the second half with a counter-attack that could be a great chance. Scoring the second goal could change everything. We didn’t do and we concede a penalty. I will say penalty but it was a soft penalty because there was a lot of pushing and shoving in the box.

Rafa impressed with the away fans:

Good news on Slimani:

Rafa was asked by Sky: ‘Are you good enough?’

I hope so. I think this group of players they are working really hard so we can’t complain. We have to be sure that the new players add something to this group. We have a young team, we must stick together.

Benitez will speak to Ciaran Clark on the shirt pulling. But...

We talked about that. We have to be sure it won’t happen in the future.

We cannot do it but I see a lot of similar situations where a penalty isn’t given for us. Consequences are different.

So what happened to change things in the second half, Rafa?

Because we didn’t score the second goal. We had good chances in the first half and the counter attack in the second half. But if you analyse all the chances that they had - Townsend, Zaha and Benteke - they pushed and created chances because they had the pace, the physical power to put you under pressure.

We tried to manage but they were on top of us.

Rafa on whether it was a point won or a point lost. Speaking to Sky:

To come here and get a point - before the game I would say no. After the second half I’d say maybe but I still have the feeling in the first half that we could have scored another goal and (then) we’d have won.

Rafa confirms why Joselu was out:

He has a virus and we have to be careful when players have a virus.

This is Rafa from Sky:

In the first half we were fine. We started the second half with a counter-attack that could be a great chance. Scoring the second goal could change everything. We didn’t do and we concede a penalty. I will say penalty but it was a soft penalty because there was a lot of pushing and shoving in the box.

Rafa not convinced by penalty:

You can see a lot of situations like this. It is difficult to say if it was clear, but there was pushing and pulling going on.

Rafa on sticking together:

Our fans are fantastic and when we go away, you can hear them. Home and away they are fantastic. If we stick together, we will be stronger.

Islam Slimani should be ready for Man U:

He was not ready today, but I hope he will be for next week.

Rafa pleased with how hard the team is working.

We were working really hard, and blocking, and giving everything. That is the only way for us and the other teams at the bottom. That is clear.

Here’s Rafa on the point:

First half we were doing well, but we didn’t get the second goal.

Second half we had to defend against a good team with good strikers.

It could be better, it could be worse. I think it is fair, more or less.

Roy Hodgson has given his press conference:

Here’s your match report while we wait for Rafa Benitez to deliver his post-match press conference.

Thoughts, then?

What an idiot.

Darlow not really biting when asked by Sky about his own performance given Dubravka’s signing.

It’s OK. I made a couple of saves. Hopefully it’ll see us through until the end of the season. We’ll keep fighting. We’ve got a lot of grit and desire and will go to the end.

We know how you feel Rafa...

Karl Darlow says NUFC have grit:

First half we were very good and had a lot of chances, played some good football, second half they came back at us and we did well to hold on to a draw.

“(My head) is woodwork at the minute, not my friend! But we’ve shown we have got a lot of fight and can hopefully get out of this relegation battle.

“A sloppy five, 10 minutes from myself that could have been better. We have a lot of grit and desire and will go to the very end.

“If that was a penalty...”

So we’ll have Rafa Benitez’s post-match press conference as soon as he emerges. Probably catching his breath like the rest of us!
