College hockey: UMD women, Whitecaps play to tie in exhibition

The Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team wrapped up its three-game 2017-18 exhibition series against the Minnesota Whitecaps with a 2-2 tie on Saturday at Amsoil Arena.

Sophomore forward and captain Sydney Brodt scored both of the goals for the Bulldogs, who won the previous two meetings this season 4-1 and 7-2. Brodt gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead late in the first period and tied the game 23 seconds into the third.

Sadie Lundquist and Amy Menke scored in the second period to give the Whitecaps — an elite senior women's team made up of former college players — a 2-1 advantage with Menke scoring on the power play.

The Bulldogs return to WCHA play next weekend hosting No. 1-ranked and league leading Wisconsin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday at Amsoil Arena. It's the Bulldogs' final regular season home series of the season as they close the season at Minnesota State-Mankato.

UMD sits fourth in the WCHA, one point ahead of fifth-place Bemidji State in the race to host a WCHA first-round playoff series. The Beavers close the season at home against St. Cloud State and at Ohio State.
