College basketball: UMD women stymie Concordia

Ann Simonet scored 14 points and Minnesota Duluth took control in the second and third quarters to beat Concordia-St. Paul 61-44 in NSIC women's basketball Saturday before 499 at Romano Gym.

Sammy Kozlowski turned in another quality all-around game for the Bulldogs (13-8 overall, 10-7 NSIC), with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Emma Boehm was also in double figures with 10 points as UMD improved to 8-2 at home this season.

Lindsay Dorr had 12 points to lead Concordia-St. Paul (7-17, 4-14), which shot just 30.2 percent, including 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from 3-point range. UMD's defense forced 20 turnovers for the second straight game and held the NSIC's leading scorer, Anna Schmitt, to just four points on 1-for-10 shooting.

The Golden Bears were outscored 37-21 in the middle quarters.

Wisconsin-Superior 60,

Crown 28

The Yellowjackets' swarming defense continues to suffocate its UMAC opposition, this time calming the Storm at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Hailey Kontny scored 17 points to lead UWS (17-4, 12-0), while Justine Larson added 11 points and six rebounds. The Yellowjackets, who improved to 44-0 in league play since joining the UMAC in 2015, led 16-5 after the first quarter and 35-10 at the break.

Desiree Davis had 13 points to lead Crown (9-11, 4-7). UWS forced the Storm into 20 turnovers and 21.7 percent shooting, including 0-for-10 from 3-point range.

St. Scholastica 58,

Holly VanKempen scored 13 points and Rashonna Thomas added 12 points in a balanced effort for the Saints at Reif Gym.

St. Scholastica (11-10, 7-6 UMAC) used a stout defensive effort, holding the Knights to 26.2 percent shooting, including 13.3 percent (2-for-15) from 3-point range.

Grace Schultz had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Martin Luther (5-17, 3-10).

COLLEGE MEN

Concordia-St. Paul 88,

Minnesota Duluth 85

Avan Ward scored 33 points as the Golden Bears rallied from 16 points down in the second half to win the NSIC contest in overtime at Romano Gym.

Bryndan Matthews added 28 points for Concordia (5-19, 4-14 NSIC), including 12 of 20 from the free-throw line. Ward and Matthews had seven points apiece in accounting for all of the Golden Bears' 14 points in overtime, including four free throws by Ward in the final 24 seconds to help keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Brandon Myer of Superior had 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead UMD (9-14, 5-12). Jake Wilson added 19 points off the bench, while Logan Rohrscheib (15 points) and Sean Burns (14) also scored in double figures.

Wilson made a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining to pull the Bulldogs within a point before Ward sank a pair a free throws with four seconds remaining, and the Bulldogs couldn't get another shot off.

St. Scholastica 93,

Zach Dahlman had a career-high 24 points, five assists and four rebounds as the Saints won their eighth straight, their longest streak since winning 11 straight at the end of the 2008-09 season.

Jarod Wilken (16 points), Brandon Newman (14) and Nate Weets (11) also scored in double figures for the Saints (14-7, 10-3 UMAC), who shot a season-high 56.9 percent from the field and 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from 3-point range.

Richard Eckmann had 18 points to lead the Knights (4-18, 2-11), who were outscored 35-2 over the final eight minutes of the first half and first seven minutes of the second half.

Crown 66,

Wisconsin-Superior 64

The Yellowjackets pulled to within 66-64 on Shaq Coleman's 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining but could get no closer in falling at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Timothy Wendel had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Crown (11-10, 7-5 UMAC), but he missed a 3-pointer and a free throw in the final minute that gave UWS hope.

Coleman, of Duluth, finished with 22 points to lead the Yellowjackets (5-17, 3-10), while Colton Williams added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Coleman missed a layup with 18 seconds remaining and Vid Milenkovic missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds for UWS.
