TAIPEI - Singer-songwriter Kenji Wu's ailing mother married his father before she died, it was revealed in a tear-jerking video at her memorial service on Saturday.
The star's mother died of lung cancer on Jan 12 at the age of 65, said Taiwan Apple Daily.
Wu, who broke down several times at the service, said his mother had taught him three things, the first of which was courage.
"Mum was the bravest in her last months. It was difficult, but she kept telling me she was going to ride out this storm."
She also taught him to be self-reliant, but he said he would have to "refute" her. "During this time, I've come to feel I have to rely on friends. During my mother's most difficult period, they took turns to be with her every day, singing, laughing, just hoping she would be awake when I came back."
The third thing she taught him was to realise his dreams. "I wanted to be a singer and I did it," he said. "I wanted to make a movie, and I also did it."
At the service, a memorial video showed Wu's mother getting married to his father on her sickbed - signing the certificate, wearing the ring, getting kissed by her groom on the cheek - with the singer as a teary witness.
After the civil ceremony was shown, there were teary eyes all round, said the report.
It had been one of Wu's mother's wishes to go to Hawaii, but she never took the trip. So he had the funeral hall decked with fresh flowers, against a beach backdrop.
She also said she wanted to buy handbags, and he gave her the money to do so, he recalled. But it turned out that she had been saving up the money for him. "The coolest thing is, the (bank) code is six digits, she gave me only four," he said.
Although his mother was sick in her last days, it was the period "I saw her smile the most, beacuse everyone was with her", he later told Taiwan Apple Daily.
"She also found out how much Dad loved her. These few months, I felt for the first time how much they were in love."
