Hawk Eye reporters were among a select group of Iowa journalists recognized Friday night in Des Moines as winners of the 2017 Iowa Associated Press Media Editors newspaper contest.
John Bohnenkamp, sports editor, and Elizabeth Meyer, state and federal government reporter, each won an award in the Division II category, which includes Iowa newspapers with a weekly circulation between 25,000 and 124,999.
Bohnenkamp earned second place for the sports "spot news" story "A Day of Redemption" about the Sept. 9 University of Iowa versus Iowa State University football game where the Hawkeyes narrowly defeated their in-state rival 44-41 in overtime.
Meyer won third place in the "interpretive story or series" category for "Sessions Shines Spotlight on LGBT Teen's Murder" about how U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions inserted his Justice Department in the murder trial of Jorge Sanders-Galvez, convicted last December of killing Burlington teenager Kedarie Johnson.
Fourteen daily newspapers submitted 517 entries in the annual contest.
Other award winners include: Kyle Munson, The Des Moines Register, Bill Wundram Column Writing; The Des Moines Register, Newswriting Sweepstakes; Dubuque Telegraph Herald, Photo Sweepstakes; The Des Moines Register, Iowa Associated Press Member of the Year.
