Wyrick leads Hounds' charge to state swim meet

Burlington High School's Blake Wyrick qualified for the state boys swimming meet in four events and the Grayhounds broke four school records at Saturday's district meet at Linn-Mar High School in Marion.

Wyrick advances in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events and the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. He teamed with Kale Schuff, Matthew Rowland and Josh Gulick in the relays.

Cedar Rapids Washington won the district team title with 383 points. Burlington was fifth with 234 points and Keokuk finished ninth at 50 points.

Keokuk's Dylan Jones advances to the state meet in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Wyrick finished second in the 100 freestyle in 48.54 seconds, the 16th fastest qualifier in the state. He took third in the 50 freestyle in 22.20 seconds, ranking 20th statewide.

Burlington's 200 medley relay team finished second in the district with a time of 1:40.12, ranking 15th statewide. The 200 freestyle relay finished fifth at Linn Mar in 1:31.14, ranking 24th in the state. Both relays posted school record times.

Rowland and teammate Jacob Mohrfeld qualified for the state meet in the 100 breaststroke. Rowland finished third in the district with a school record time of 1:01.44. Mohrfeld was fourth in 1:02.44. Rowland's time is 13th fastest in the state and Mohrfeld ranks 18th.

Schuff finished fifth in the 100 backstroke and didn't qualify for state in that event, but his time of 57.14 seconds is a new BHS record.

Keokuk's Jones, a sophomore, won the district 200 individual medley in 2:00.06, ranking him 11th in the state. He finished second in the district 100 breaststroke in 1:00.98, good for the 12th seed in the state.

Five West Burlington-Notre Dame/Danville wrestlers qualified for district competition by finishing first or second in the Class 2A sectional tournament hosted by Assumption High School in Davenport.

Keokuk advances four wrestlers and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union advances three.

Assumption won the team title with 266 points. Columbus/W-MU was second at 163 and was followed by Clear Creek-Amana (155.5), West Burlington-Notre Dame/Danville (142), Iowa City Liberty (136.5) and Keokuk (108).

West Burlington-Notre Dame/Danville's Caleb LaLonde, Tucker Moore and Drake Fox each won their weight classes and Grifen Molle and Cole Jarrett were second. The top two finishers in each weight class advance to Saturday's district tournament at Fairfield.

LaLonde, at 152 pounds, beat Assumption's Joe Deckert, 5-3, in the semifinals and pinned Columbus/W-MU's Jose Cerezo in the finals. Moore (170 pounds) pinned Columbus/W-MU's JT Cunningham in 4:41 in the semifinals and pinned Liberty's Gavin Luze in 1:41 in the championship match. Fox decisioned Clear Creek-Amana's Jonah Upah. 6-2, in the semifinals and pinned Keokuk's Jerry Glenn in 5:59 in the finals.

Molle won his semifinal by fall, was pinned by Clear Creek-Amana's Samual Stevens in 3:46 of the championship match and then earned second place with a 14-2 major decision over Assumption's TJ Fitzpatrick in the wrestlebacks. Jarrett won his semifinal match by fall and was pinned by Assumption's Julian Broderson in 41 seconds in the finals.

Dreyton LaVeine (195) finished third for WB-ND/D. Drake Smith (160) finished fourth, Mitchell Trexel (145) was fifth and Bryce Sankus (138) took sixth.

Columbus/W-MU had individual champions in Jarod Kadel (106) and Cam Rice (138). Tucker Bright (120) advances with a second place finish.

Kadel earned byes in the first two rounds, then won the title with an 8-0 major decision over Assumption's Trenton McDonough. Rice drew a quarterfinal bye, beat Assumption's Adam Laubenthal, 11-0, in the semifinals and decisioned Keokuk's Matt Wyatt, 6-2, in the finals.

Bright won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by falls, then was pinned in 1:16 by Assumption's Noah Gonzalez in the finals.

Columbus/W-MU's Will Schrob (132), Jose Cerezo (152) and Chance Malone (182) finished third. Brody Barton (113), Juanita Piper (145) and JT Cunningham (170) finished fourth. Alberto Lagunas (195) was fifth and Noah Freeman (160) finished sixth.

Keokuk advances four runner-up finishers — Matt Wyatt (138), Dylan Jeffers (160), Austin Tibbits (195) and Glenn (285).

Jeffers pinned Liberty's Jacob Morning in the semfinals, then was pinned by Assumption's Kole Kreinbring in the finals. Tibbits pinned WB/ND/D's LaVeine in the semifinals, then was pinned by Assumption's Seth Adrian in the championship match. Glenn pinned Assumption's Nate Hempel in the semifinals before losing to Fox in the finals.

Keokuk's Michael Glasscock (220) finished third. Tres Merydith (113), Levi Boudewyn (132) and Zack Glasscock (170) were fifth and Corey Skinner (145) finished sixth.

Five Illini West wrestlers and one from West Hancock advance to the Illinois Class 1A sectional tournament via top three finishes at the Camp Point Central regional.

Beardstown won the team title with 178 points. Illini West was fifth at 94 points and West Hancock was ninth with 22 points.

West Hancock's Chase Hartweg won the 160-pound title. He drew a quarterfinal bye, beat PORTA's Johnathon Leoffler on a 16-6 major decision, then needed double overtime in the finals to defeat Illini West's Santos Castillo, 8-5.

Castillo advanced to the championship match by pinning Quincy Notre Dame's Sam Schlegl in 3:05 in the semifinals. Both Hartweg and Castillo advance to Saturday's sectional at Stanford.

Also advancing for Illini West are Michael Lord, Ty Jackson, Drake Huss and Gabe Castillo.

Lord won the 152-pound championship by pinning PORTA's Ryne Wilson in 1:10 in the semifinals and decisioning Jared Bolon of Monmouth-Roseville, 4-2, in the finals. Jackson won the championship at 285 pounds. He pinned Beardstown's Ivan Cortez in 37 seconds in the semifinals, then posted a 5-3 decision over Monmouth-Roseville's Josh Cerna in the championship match.

Huss advances by virtue of a second place finish at 182 pounds. He pinned Midwest Central's Jacob Daniel in 1:28 in the semifinals. Beardstown's Brady O'Hara edged Huss 6-5 in the finals.

Gabe Castillo finished third at 145 pounds. He won a quarterfinal match, lost in the semifinals, then pinned both opponents in two consolation bracket matches.

Levins, Gutowski

pace Grayhounds

Brett Levins and Danielle Gutowski paced the Burlington High School boys and girls teams in the Muscatine Invitational.

Levins rolled a 236-199—435 series to pace the BHS boys. Blake Grelk had a 197-221—418 and Bradley Levinson rolled a 213-191—404. Paul Creek had a 365 series, Chance Ballard rolled 302 and Tyler Kirkpatrick had a 282.

Gutowski led the BHS girls with a 149-138—287. Jaylee Logan rolled a 276 and was followed by Leala Rettig (265), Courtney Casaday (252), Kelsey Bush (237) and Amanda Underwood (219).

Jeff Mohler led the Burlington junior varsity boys with a 322. Rachel Mason paced the JV girls with a 283.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Notre Dame 44, Pittsfield 41

The Nikes held off a fourth quarter Pittsfield rally in the KHQA Superfan Shootout in Quincy, Illinois.

Mitchell Brent led Notre Dame with 11 points. Ryle Koenig had nine and Gavin Kies scored seven.
