February marks a deadly early start to the New Year as authorities are investigating two traffic fatalities that occurred on Friday in Carroll County.

Driver Jacqueline Wanner, 61, of Magnolia, was pronounced dead in Aultman Hospital in Canton after a two-vehicle nearly head-on crash on state Route 171 near New Harrisburg about 6:35 p.m.

The other driver, Ashley Semrock, 27, of Canton, was treated at Aultman Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Gary Wolfe of the New Philadelphia Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol,

Wolfe said Wanner was driving a 2016 Honda Civic eastbound when Semrock went left of center in her oncoming 2010 Mazda 6.

Officers said that the crash occurred on a straight stretch of highway with dry conditions. Both drivers were wearing safety belts and officers said that no alcohol, drugs or speed are suspected in the crash.

EMS and rescue personnel from Carrollton Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

Earlier Friday, Carroll County Sheriff's officers handled a one-vehicle crash into a tree that claimed the life of a man on state Route 9, about four miles north of Carrollton.

No other details were available about that crash.
