EXETER — In a game the Exeter High School boys hockey team had to have, senior Anders Dachsteiner went on the offensive on the opening shift.
His goal 20 seconds into the first period got the Blue Hawks rolling, and a three-goal surge during a 5-minute major in the second helped Exeter secure Saturday’s 4-3 win over Salem.
Dachsteiner finished with two goals and an assist as the Blue Hawks climbed to 5-7 in Division I. Salem dropped to 6-5-1.
“First goal, first shift — that’s an important one,” Dachsteiner said. “We started off with a lot of intensity, real fast. Getting a goal picks up our momentum and we were just pumped from there.”
It was a 1-1 game early in the second period when Salem’s Eric McDermott was whistled for a major penalty. Dachsteiner, Ricky Davis and Brendan Doyle all scored power-play goals with McDermott in the box, and Exeter’s lead was 4-1 entering the third.
Salem was awarded its own 5-minute power play when Exeter’s Brayden Lowery was sent to the box for boarding. The Blue Hawks limited the damage to one goal.
“We spent about a half and hour on the power play (on Friday), and I guess it paid off,” Exeter coach Jim Tufts said. “The difference in the game was, we had the major and scored three, and they had the major and got the one. So power play made the difference.”
Sam Perry had two assists in the game for Exeter. Davis and Tyler Blood also picked up helpers. Goalie Jude Rogles made 23 saves.
Exeter travels to Londonderry on Wednesday.
