The unmasking of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein as a man with Henry VIII’s gargantuan appetites and sense of entitlement (more than 80 women have so far accused him of sexual abuse; he denies all allegations of non-consensual sex) has caused an earthquake, and the tremors are still being felt – not only in Hollywood, but in politics, sport and business. It’s hard to imagine any other circumstances in which the testosterone-charged Formula 1 would announce, as it did this week, that scantily-clad “grid girls” posing in front of cars “does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms”. How long before a Grand Prix victor shaking a phallic magnum of champagne is also deemed inappropriate and everyone is offered a nice cup of tea instead?
