WINTER HAVEN — Shakira McCoy came close.

The Lakeland girls weightlifter finished seventh at the FHSAA Class 2A state finals on Saturday at Arnold High School Gym in Panama City Beach. The top six lifters in each of the 10 divisions were awarded medals.

McCoy finished with a 335-pound total lift in the 199-pound division, which consisted of an 170-pound bench press and an 165 clean-and-jerk effort.

“She set a PR (personal record) on bench,” Lakeland head coach Jeremy Bennett said. “Her clean and jerk just came up a little bit short. Even if she would have PR’d on clean, she would have come up a little bit short. She did all she could.”

In the first flight of lower-weight divisions, Lakeland two-time state qualifier Jessica Piedra finished ninth in the 101-pound division. She cleared 115 pounds in both the bench press and clean-and-jerk segments for a 230 total.

“Next year we are looking at a medal for her and then a state championship by her senior year,” Bennett said.

Winter Haven’s Jepharnie Magloire, was holding down sixth position with an 160 effort in the 169-pound division but fell off the pace and finished 15th after an 130 bench press.

Auburndale senior and first-year lifter Jessica Walters finished 17th in the 110-pound division after knocking down an 135-pound lift on the clean and jerk. She was in eighth-place after the bench press competition.

“She defaulted on three-straight cleans for her elbow hitting her knee,” Auburndale coach Peter Rausch said.

Lake Gibson’s Breanna Wilson finished 17th in the 119-pound division with a 225-pound total. She recorded an 115-pound clean and jerk and an 110-pound bench.

Navarre won the state championship with 25 points and Vero Beach was second with 20.
