Cary girls slip past Athens Drive, 53-47

Cary, N.C. — Cary defeated Athens Drive on the road Friday night, 53-47, to snap a four-game losing skid.
The Imps dug themselves an eight-point hole after the first quarter, but Cary exploded for a 23-14 second-quarter run and led by one point at halftime.
Cary junior Micah Thomas scored all seven of her points Friday in the second frame to spearhead the Imps’ game-changing run.
The Lady Imps carried its momentum into the second half and outscored Athens Drive 15-7 in the third period.
Cary outscored Athens Drive 38-21 in the middle quarters Friday night.
Athens Drive outscored Cary by three points over the final eight minutes, but the Jaguars weren’t able to complete the comeback.
Freshman Teonni Key led all scorers with 18 points in the victory. Junior Ariana Smith also finished in double figures for Cary. Imps senior Megan Cannady finished with nine points – all from beyond-the-arc.
Athens Drive sophomore Hanna Malik drilled four three-point baskets and led the Jaguars with 16 points. Senior Mary Grace Bunch finished with 10 points.
Cary (10-11, 3-4 Tri-6) and Athens Drive (9-11, 1-6 Tri-6) will both return to action Tuesday. The Imps will host Riverside at 6 p.m., and the Jaguars are slated to visit Panther Creek for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
