He was famous for singing the hit songs Cloud Nine, I Can't Get Next to You and Pap Was a Rollin' Stone.
Born in Alabama, he began singing at the age of two for his father's church, before studying music as a young man after the family moved to Detroit.
He joined The Temptations in 1968, replacing David Ruffin, and sang with them periodically up until 1989.
Edwards was reported to have died while undergoing rehabilitation for an aneurysm.
"It really saddens me to know that another Motown soldier is gone. Rest In Peace my brother. You were a great talent," Smokey Robinson told Rolling Stone.
