Man who live streamed CMPD shooting opens up about incident

A potentially suicidal man who was armed with a knife was fatally shot by police during an encounter with Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers Friday afternoon in northwest Charlotte.

Christian school getting rid of religion to become publicly-funded charter

Mountain Island Day School, a private Christian school was recently approved to convert to a public charter school in August. That means that they will have to turn their weekly chapel in to a non-religious assembly. The will take down the plaques with Bible verses and religious quotes and the steeple may be coming down because it makes the roof leak. Founders Tom and Tammy Winstead say they wrestled with the decision, but ultimately decided that the $3 million a year in public money they can bring in as a charter school helps them better serve low and moderate income students in the Paw Creek area. They say education has always been their main mission and things like compassion and justice can be taught without referring to any specific faith.

Blinded by tumor Haitian doctor prays he will practice again

Dr. Louis Maxime Edouard wanted to be a doctor in his native Haiti to help his people. In 2014 Edouard began to lose his sight beginning with his peripheral vision. A tumor was pushing against his optic nerve. Dr. Will Caldwell of Novant Health who does volunteer work in Haiti at a clinic created by Give Hope Global and brought Edouard to Charlotte to have the tumor removed.

Tom Haberstroh gives suggestions on taking on the ALS Pepper Challenge

Haberstroh is a Charlotte-based NBA media personality whose mother, Patty, was diagnosed with ALS in October 2017. Haberstroh and his siblings officially kicked off the ALS Pepper Challenge on Christmas Day. In its first month, the challenge reached its goal of raising over $50,000 for the ALS Therapy Development Institute, which is focused on research of ALS treatment and therapies.
