UAE- Red Bull Air Race sets sky on fire

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Thousands of spectators were spoilt for choice at Abu Dhabi Corniche on Friday as scores of Red Bull Air Race Championship contenders touched new heights in the sky.

Young, old and debutant pilots swirled their way through the many gates to set the fastest qualifying time. At the end of a close fight in Master Class, German racer Matthias Dolderer's tactics and efficiency saw him take the top spot going into the race day today.

"I tried to get the best speed. The major goal is not to overdo the G-Force or get penalty points," Dolderer said after the qualifiers.

American racer Michael Goulian, who has arguably the fastest plane, came second.

"We had a plan and I am trying to get everyone to catch us," the Team Goulian pilot said.

2017 World Champion Yoshihide Muroya came third and looks good for a podium finish.

Debutant Ben Murphy of Blades Team also impressed the spectators. The Brit had won five podiums while in the Challenger Cup and the rookie did well till the big names eclipsed his timing.

"It was good fun. We had good time on first lap and could've been quicker in second but for the G," Murphy, who finished ninth, said.

If all this wasn't enough there were Red Bull skydive team's wing suit jump, aerobatic Al Fursan show that left the sky filled in national flag colours of red, black, white and green, Jet Pack Man and more activities at Fan Zone. All of this kept the thousands of enthusiasts on Corniche entertained and in awe.

The temperature was a shade over 21 degrees Celsius and wind kept picking up as the day grew older. And all this meant fun time for families.

Resident Frank Coordes, who was out there with family, rooted for Dolderer to take the crown. "I am following racing here for long. It was a tight race and quality one."

Local Salem Al Harthy was disappointed with Abu Dhabi defending champion Martin Sonka unable to get into the top three. "I am sure he will come good tomorrow," Al Harty said.

And just as the pace-setters finished their qualifying session, Pal Takats Paramotor - ultralight flight was up to entertain all. Later there was NSRC and SAR helicopter display. And for those who missed the action of the day, ensure presence at the Corniche today. It's the Race Day loaded with many side acts too.
