CORPUS CHRISTI — Alice High School senior Greg Rodriguez extended his high school diving career by a couple of weeks and earned a trip back to the campus where he’s planning on continuing his education.

Rodriguez advanced to the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships by placing second in the 1-meter dive at the Region VIII meet at the Corpus Christi Natatorium Friday afternoon. Rodriguez scored 380.30, which breaks his school diving score record that he set a year ago.

Rodriguez, who plans on attending Texas beginning in the fall, will compete Feb. 17 and 18 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas.

In January, Rodriguez placed second in the event at the District 30-5A meet in Corpus Christi.

Rodriguez placed 15th in Class 5A in last year’s state diving championships in Austin.

A junior in 2017, Rodriguez surpassed expectations at the state meet. He entered the meet ranked No. 16 in the state. He made the finals and then placed 15th out of 24 divers.
