1. FSU Speaker Series: Best-selling author Margot Lee Shetterly will speak at Fayetteville State University on Tuesday as part of the Chancellor's Speaker Series. Her talk will be at 7 p.m. in the J.W. Seabrook Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. Shetterly is the author of "Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race.''
2. VA recruiting fair: The Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center is holding a recruiting fair for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants on Feb. 10 from 9 to 11:45 a.m. in room 1728 at the Fayetteville VA Health Care Center at 7300 S. 3. Valentine's carriage rides: The Cool Spring Downtown District will host romantic, horse-drawn carriage rides for Valentine’s on Feb. 10 from 1 to 8 p.m. Rides leave from 222 Hay St. across from the Cameo Art House Theatre and last about 20 minutes. Tickets for group rides are $15 per person or $10 for children under 10. Private rides for two are also available for $60. Reservations are recommended. Tickets may be charged over the phone at 678-8899. The rain date is Feb. 11.
4. Friendship House fundraiser: Blogger Adrian Wood, author of "Tales of an Educated Debutante,'' is the guest speaker at a fundraiser for Friendship House at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cape Fear Regional Theatre. The event will include shopping, treats and a cash bar. Shopping is 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $35. Tickets sales end Monday. They will not be sold at the door.
