National seminar on 'Recreating Approaches for Quality Enhancement in Higher Education' held in Jaipur
A two-day national seminar on "recreating approaches for quality enhancement in higher education" was held at Kanoria College in Jaipur under the joint auspices of Kanoria College and NAAC.

Since it was a seminar, more of information based keynote addresses and discussions along with paper presentations were organised during the deliberations.

The issues of quality and pedagogy were discussed in the knowledge based seminar which had far-reaching and serious implications. Higher education in most developing countries continues to be cantered around lectures and content learning through notes in the hands of teachers and passed on to the students. Already, an international debate on making higher education pedagogically sound and build a scholarship of teaching is on in various countries.

However, my view on the implication of the seminar is the development of pedagogical approaches, organising the classroom session studies and initiating a culture of the scholarship of teaching within the context of the academic disciplines and the diversity among learners.

I gather that there is a need for developing the spirit of engagement of higher education teachers and educators through action research in teaching and learning which encourage critical reflection of classroom practices and communication. This leads to improvement in the classroom practices of teachers. Also, the dissemination of action research papers help others to go for pedagogically sound teaching practices.

There is a dire need for creating self-reflective higher education teachers through their training and development at staff colleges. Since seminars should result into recommendations. Therefore, my recommendation is that the agenda of staff colleges should the in-service training programmes should get oriented towards applying pedagogical and action research practices to one's subject.

In short, the complementary nature of subject teaching and action research needs to be put in place. The research has shown that pedagogically sound discipline-based teaching has led to better quality higher education.

To me, the applied pedagogic research brings learning theories into action and higher education teachers would have to don the roles of reflective teacher-researchers.
