The Nicholls State University women’s and men’s tennis programs opened the 2018 spring season with a sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Friday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Both teams played doubleheaders against Mississippi Valley State, and both won the two matches 7-0 and 4-0. The women did not surrender a point in either of its contests, while the men allowed just three points.
“After playing against each other in practice for the last month, it was great to get out there against different opponents,” said Nicholls tennis head coach Greg Harkins. “Starting out the season with three matches at home, it will allow us more time to work on things. We’ll have a good Loyola team come tomorrow so we’ll need to be ready.”
Along with six newcomers making their spring debuts, redshirt junior Stephanie Barnett played in her first team match since the start of 2016. Barnett, who earned Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2015, missed the last two seasons with injuries. Barnett won all four of her singles and doubles matches at No. 1 against the Devilettes, 6-0.
