Here are five sporting events we are watching this week:

BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS CONTINUE WITH PLENTY OF LOCAL FLAVOR

Numerous area girls and boys soccer teams are still alive in the prep playoffs and the action continues this week.

The match with the biggest local impact is Tuesday’s Division II girls second round match between No. 10 Terrebonne and No. 7 Central Lafourche at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Trojan Stadium in Mathews. The winner advances to the quarterfinals.

The 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Boys and Girls State Soccer Championships will be held Feb. 21-24 at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette’s Cajun Soccer Field.

NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

Decision time is near for many high school senior football players as National Signing Day is around the corner.

On Wednesday, thousands of student-athletes around the country, including several local players, will sign national letters-of-intent to join college football programs for the 2018 season. Nicholls State University will also announce its signing class on Wednesday.

Some of the area high school football players that are expected to sign on Wednesday are Ellender running back Reginald Williams, St. James defensive tackle Jason Dumas, H.L. Bourgeois defensive back Richaud Batiste and E.D. White running back Nik Shanklin.

Four local players – Central Lafourche High receiver/kick returner David Robinson Jr. (Nicholls), St. James High defensive back Sean Preston Jr. (Mississippi State University), Ellender receiver Kobe Hartman (Southern University) and Ellender defensive lineman Terrence Gray (Southern University) signed their national letters-of-intent during the December early signing period.

PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL MEDIA DAY

The Terrebonne General Medical Center Community Sports Institute will hold prep baseball and softball media day at its locker room at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The event gives local baseball and softball coaches a chance to meet with local media members and share information about their teams heading into the season along with catching up with one another.

COVENANT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY AT HOUMA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

There’s a big District 8-1A boys hoops game set for 6 p.m. Friday when Covenant Christian Academy travels to face Houma Christian School.

The first district matchup was postponed because of inclement weather and has not yet been rescheduled.

The Lions and Warriors are two of the top teams in the district.

HOUSTON BAPTIST AT NICHOLLS STATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Nicholls State men’s and women’s basketball teams return home for Southland Conference action on Saturday afternoon when the teams host Houston Baptist at Broussard Court at Stopher Gym.

The women’s game begins at 1 p.m. with the men’s game set to follow at 3 p.m.

The men’s game can be heard on 100.3-FM and seen online on the station’s YouTube channel.
