A SELF-described quarter life crisis and a desire to see her own children grow up instead of other people's inspired Buderim mum Beck Jericho to swap blackboards for mixing bowls.

The former lifesaving athlete and mother-of-two left her eight-year career as a primary school teacher to start her own cake business.

Having made cakes on and off for years for friends and family, she was craving an outlet for her creativity and more flexibility to be home with her sons Harry, 4, and Cooper, almost a year old.

Her husband Rob's work as an airline pilot meant routine was becoming challenging, so 'Be Caked' was born.

"I love to cook and I baked a lot with my Nanna," Mrs Jericho said.

She described the transition from career to self-employed as "pretty terrifying" but it was also fun, exciting and rewarding.

Her first market stall last Sunday went "pretty well" and she already has five weddings booked in this year.

She's been asked to cater for her son's kindergarten events and is currently working on creating a Valentine's Day 'cupcake bouquet' to offer lovers a sweet alternative to roses.

She said there was always pressure to perform, as she was a perfectionist when it came to her creations.

"You don't want to produce something you're not proud of," Mrs Jericho said.

Mrs Jericho said customers were often surprised when they realised the amount of work that goes into cake creation and she tried to source as many local ingredients as she could to create and adorn her cakes.
